For the last couple of years Luny Tunes have consistently commanded the
top spot in the world of reggaeton. With an open door work policy, Luny
Tunes will work with anyone that has a good rhyme. From their groundbreaking
and head spinning work on Tego Calderon “Pa Que Te Retozen”
this duo have proven that their production is on a level on par with teams
such as the Neptunes. Mas Flow 2 follows the evolution of their rhythms,
as the tunes collaborate with everyone under the sun resulting with an
album of cohesive melodies with outstanding collaborations. A track that
stands out is Daddy Yankee & Deevani “Miarame(2) feat Tego Calderon
”. This track shows how far Tunes is willing to go to update and
expand the style of reggaeton. Built around a Middle Eastern melody, sung
in a sexy female voice, the track switches from a merengue beat to reggaeton
while the rhymes are pure hip hop. Tego comes in, does his thing and Daddy
Yankee lends his voice with an urgency and desire that flows easily with
“elegancia”. The fact that such a mix works is a sign of the
confidence that Luny Tunes have acquired over the last year. There are
not that many producers out there willing to take such risks. The surprise
highlight for many will be the Baby Ranks & Notch “Verme”.
In this track a familiar reggaeton dancahall beat is
dressed up in a furry in synthesizers, with full on spanglish lyrics and
vocoder assisted vocals. This piece stands out from everything else in
the record. While not quite reggaeton, this tracks achieves a chill vibe
that transcends genres and blends Latin rhythms with R&B. Justifying
the hype “Verme” is the sound of a young team of talented
producers taking risk while having a good time.
The closest thing to disappointment in this release, is that with so many
collaborations it sometimes gets confusing trying to decipher who is doing
the rhyming. For instance as in the aforementioned Tego collaboration,
“guests” only turn up for about ten seconds only to disappear
never to be heard of again. Sometimes less is more. That said, there is
very little not to like in this record. The production is top notch and
the melodies will make everybody skip a heartbeat or two.
Favorite Tracks: “Mirame2” Daddy
Yankee, “Dejala Volar”, Tito El Bambino. ”Verme”
, Baby Ranks & Notch.
