Pina records Lito and Polaco are simply at the top of their game. Last
year the entire Pina family gathered at Puerto Rico’s top stadium,
the Coliseo Roberto Clemante, to celebrate Lito and Polaco undisputed
dominance in the reggaeton genre.
If you think never heard of Lito and Polaco, you are
not alone. While artist like Tego and Vico C branched out to the U.S.,
Lito and Polaco focused their energies into the Puerto Rican market.
Still, they are the Yang to Tego’s and Vico’s
Ying. You just can’t understand reggaeton without having listened
to a Lito and Polaco record. Their beefs with artists like Tego, Vico,
Eddie Dee and Voltio are the stuff of legend. Many in Puerto Rico still
remember the time that Tego and Polaco had it out on national radio
and of course who can forget all those great tiraera (MC Battle) songs
that have gone back and forth with Lito and Polaco winning a good number
of rounds.
So yes, Lito and Polaco are the guys that Tego and
Voltio are always battling with. And you have to give credit to Lito
and Polaco, they have been around since the start of the movement and
their rhymes capture the essence of being young, poor and living in
La Isla.
Back to the Roberto Clemente concert, the largest
reggaeton gathering ever to take place in Puerto Rico. Lito and Polaco
put on their best show with special guests Nicky Jam and Don Omar. The
loyal audience of twenty thousand knew and sang the lyrics to every
song La Calle Esta Dificil and Sicario De Barrio are the highlights
in what amounts to a live greatest hits collection from Lito And Polaco.
A good place for beginners to start the CD also features an extra DVD
full of interviews, concert footage and backstage action. This is by
far the best CD/DVD combo out there. Fuera De Serie Live does a fantastic
job at capturing what Puerto Rican reggaeton was in 2004, the most energetic
music on Earth.
Lito and Polaco are moving on, having abandoned
the Tiraera, they have made peace with most of their enemies and are
finally working on their solo debuts. But make no mistake the duo is
tighter than ever and have no plans to split up. Still, Fuera De Serie
Live remains an indelible document for a golden era in reggaeton. It
was the place to be in 2004, if you were at the Coliseo then take it
as a memento and if you missed it this is your chance to be part of
it. A highly recommended record, it wont be leaving my Ipod anytime
soon.
