Every once in a while a record comes along and changes the way that people
look at things. Barrio Fino's impact has extended far beyond the world
of reggaeton and made a splash in far and away places. What's best is
that this record was not intended to have that dreaded "crossover
appeal" that we come to expect from an international best seller.
No. Barrio Fino is pure undiluted reggaeton, meant for latin consumption
but somehow embraced by a wider world.
Surpassing his previous efforts, Daddy Yankee sounds confident and relaxed.
With an album production that benefits from an anything goes musical attitude,
this is a record that's not afraid of going into new directions. Propelled
by a hammering syncopating beat, Daddy Yankee goes deep in his quest for
the latin soul. It all comes together for the gigantic "Gazolina"
a song that's so fresh and perfectly familiar that is hard to forget how
ground breaking it truly is. With a cross beat that's a 4/4 accelerated
hip hop grove and a it's dancehall undertones, the track is an irresistible
dance floor stumper of the highest caliber. Drop this bomb in any DJ set
and you'll know what I mean.
But "Gazolina" is far form being the best track, that honor
is shared by the hip hop flavored "Salud Y Vida" and the salsa/reggaeton
power horse "Sabor a Melao" The latter, a mind altering collaboration
with the great salsa sonero (singer) Any Montanez and the former an NYC
flavored hip hop track with a unique philosophical point of view.
There is so much to explore this 21 tracks, much more than "Gazolina"
and much more than the usual dancehall meets hip hop routine, that you
will find in lesser productions. A record such as this only comes once
in a while and is as good an introduction as you can have into the world
of urban latin beats.
