At this very moment, the reggaeton scene is mostly dominated by men. To
say that Ivy Queen is a breath of fresh air is an understatement. For
over a decade, her sweet flavored rhymes have shown us the other side
of the coin. Bringing a female perspective to a genre that desperately
needs it, Ivy's rhymes are considered by many to be among the cream of
the crop. Diva- Platinum Edition plays like a tour de force of intermingling
styles, held firmly together by a constant dembow beat, that strictly
sticks to the dancehall side of reggaeton.
First single, "Papi Te Quiero" is by far the popiest thing that
Ivy has ever recorded and it's clearly aimed to reach a wider mainstream
audience. Never the one to shout, Ivy sings gently in English and Spanish
on top of a non to subtle Jamaican synthesizer hook line that stays in
your mind long after the song is over. The rest of the record, offers
tracks that have a harder edge both lyrically and musically. "Money
Making",featuring the influential Japanese and Gran Omar (Ivy's husband),
roars by with the heavy Panamanian dancehall vibe that one expects to
find in a Sean Paul production. Elsewhere, "Bounce" comes across
as the kind spanglish hip hop dancehall hybryd that can only be constructed
when dembow beats are superimposed over hip hops hooks. The best track,
"Subelo" written and produced by Ivy, sounds nothing short of
amazing. This is the kind of song that only Ivy could make. No one can
rhyme like this, swtiching from Spanish to English, the songs finds the
perfect balance between hip hop and reggae.
A minor quip. The record could clearly benefit from some editing. At seventeen
tracks, plus five extra remixes, it's not an experience that can easily
be enjoyed in one sitting, or for that matter the average car ride but
we most take into consideration that it took Ivy Queen almost five years
to get this record out on the market. Obviously, she felt the need to
put out as much material a she possibly could. And as a statement of intent,
"Diva- Platinum Edition" raises the stakes for both men and
women. This is the classic record that she needed to make, her reputation
intact, Ivy's claim to the throne remains undisputed.
