This record/DVD combo sets out the very ambitious task of documenting and at the same time introducing the style known as reggaeton to an unsuspecting American audience. From its humble beginnings as a dancehall hybrid imported from Panama by El General to the dominating music in the island of Puerto Rico it seems that Reggaeton is now set to go global. With the help of major American exposure from artists such as Daddy Yankee, Don Omar and Tego Calderon, the time seems right for a detail overview of this new and captivating style. The documentary shows all the major players in their humble beginnings throughout poor barrios of Puerto Rico. Vico C and Tego share their views in how this music combined the best parts of hip hop with the prevailing tropical sounds of the island. To hear the tale, is to understand the uphill struggle that most of these young man endured for the creation and devotion to a music that was (and to some degree still is) shunned by the mainstream. Special moments abound especially those that give us details into the personalities of the artist. Vico C and Eddie Dee come out as humble and thoughtful people that have a profound love for their respective rhyming skills. Kudos to Wonderboy, for filming an interview with Tempo, who is now serving 20 years in federal prison for intent of distribution of a controlled substance. This memorable highlight, traces Tempo’s influence as the premier Gansta/reggaeton rapper to his sad yet brave face against a grim future in prison. For some it may be hard to hold back the tears as Tempo improvises a deadly rhyme that reconfirms his status as one of the truly great all time talents in the world of latin hip hop. The soundtrack comes complete with 26 tracks that fully convey the sonic power of reggaeton. Bests tracks are “Hoy” by up and coming LDA. “No Pierdas Tiempo" by Zion Y Lennox and the aforementioned impromptu Tempo rhyme “La Revelacion”. All in all, this is a good place for beginners to start and necessary document for those veteran listeners. In one word, Essential.
