Reggaeton Profiles: Don Omar

Born William Omar Ladron in 1978 in Carolina Puerto Rico "El Don"
was an unlikely candidate for a Reggaeton artist. Omar grew up to become
an evangelical minister. For years he would use verbal skills to preach
and spread the word of God, It wasn't until he was betrayed by his beloved
Novia that he would leave the strict ways of the lord and tune his soul
to the renegade sounds of the calle .
Don Omar would later memorialize the occasion by composing "Aunque
Te Fuiste". Now that Omar was out of the church he could "rap"
and with the same zeal that he brought to the ministry. El Don put time
and effort into his new lirica. It wasn't long until he was "discovered"
by Hector "El Bambino" from the hip hop duo Hector y Tito. Hector
was mad about Don and knew that he needed to produce the beats for an
emerging master of reggaeton. Don released the 'Last Don' - Universal
2004 and became and an instant reggaeton classic simply because of the
"quality" of the lyrics followed by pounding beats that go faster
and faster. Simply speaking its massive sandungeo for your body to dance
and flow for the mind to think.
Like Tego and Vico C, Don Omar knows that life is not black or white,
because he has been on both sides of the fence. That's why when some critics
accuse him of promoting and glamourizing violence in his lyrics and lifestyle,
El Don knows that he can not be blamed for all the bad things out there.
Life can be good and it can be bad and it can certainly be not fair. Don
Omar is one of those chosen few that knows how to lay it out for the rest
of us to experience.
2004 was the year of El Don. His release 'Last Don' was massive within
all the barrios- in the summer el Don went as far Majorca - Spain to spread
the law of the reggaeton. And a new release of the Last Don Live DVD-at
coliseo Roberto Clemente San Juan Puerto Rico Puts him up with the big
boys. He also collaborated with J-Lo on a 'Hold You Down' remix and Barrio
305 can only wait to see what Don Omar will do next.
